Under Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana(PMSSY), Health Minister India announced to build All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) in Darbhanga at cost of Rs 1,264 crore. This announcement was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led union government in September 2020.

Indeed, It's a great opportunity for the people of Darbahnga as well as for whole Mithilanchal. It has been confirmed by Officials as well "Setting up new AIIMS DARBHANGA in the state will lead to employment generation for nearly 3,000 persons in various faculty and non-faculty posts."

As per various News and updates, it is being said that proposed AIIMS before construction work has been started. And official are also working hard to estimate the cost of construction before it goes for tender process.

The decision was supported by a letter that listed five factors, including a lack of infrastructure, distance from the city, and environmental effects. On June 14, 2023, the Bihar government filed a lawsuit against the federal government over its refusal to construct AIIMS Darbhanga in Shobhan. The site at Shobhan, according to the state government, is the best location for the hospital, and the central government's choice was made arbitrarily. The foundation for AIIMS Darbhanga has not yet been placed as of June 18, 2023. Due to a shortage of resources, the hospital's development is still experiencing delays.
